EU product compliance depends on the exact product, its intended use and the rules that apply when it is placed on the market. A shower hinge, clamp, seal or handle does not automatically need CE marking because it is sold in Europe. CE marking is required only when specific EU harmonisation legislation covering that product mandates it; products outside those rules must not carry the mark. Products without a CE obligation may still be subject to general product safety requirements. Your Europe explains when CE marking is required.

Principais conclusões

  • Check the rules for the exact product and intended use before asking for a CE mark.
  • Where CE marking is required, the manufacturer follows the applicable conformity process and prepares the required documentation.
  • Importers and own-brand sellers can have specific legal responsibilities.
  • Keep statutory documents separate from retailer, project or contract specifications.
  • EU entry controls are risk-based, and customs release is not proof of product conformity.

Start with the Product, Use and Business Role

Record the model, configuration, intended use and destination market. A loose hinge, a complete shower enclosure and a component supplied as part of a larger system may be treated differently under applicable rules. Do not infer a CE obligation from a product name, material grade or supplier statement. Identify the specific EU legislation and any relevant national or project requirements for the product.

Business role matters too. An EU-based business importing goods from outside the EU must verify the manufacturer’s applicable obligations. If you have a product made for you and sell it under your own name or brand, EU guidance treats you as the manufacturer for the product rules that apply. See Your Europe’s manufacturer and importer guidance.

When CE Marking Applies

There is no single CE checklist for all shower hardware. If a specific harmonised EU rule requires CE marking, the manufacturer must identify the relevant requirements, follow the applicable conformity assessment route, prepare supporting technical documentation and draw up an EU Declaration of Conformity where required. A notified body is involved only when the relevant legislation requires it. The EU does not issue one generic CE certificate for every product.

Ask the supplier to identify the legal basis for the mark and to show that the documents apply to the exact model and intended use. If no applicable rule requires CE marking, do not request or apply a CE mark as a general quality badge. That does not remove other applicable product safety, labelling or traceability obligations.

Glass, Metals and Finishes Need Product-Specific Evidence

Tempered glass, brass, stainless steel and surface finishes do not by themselves determine whether a product needs CE marking. Requirements depend on the finished product, its use and the applicable legislation or project specification. A material declaration, salt-spray report or glass test report is useful only for the claim and sample it actually covers.

  • Match each report to the model, material, finish and configuration being purchased.
  • Check the test method, scope, sample identification and date against the requirement you are trying to verify.
  • Ask how product and batch identifiers connect inspection or test records to the shipment, where traceability applies.
  • Label retailer or project requirements as commercial requirements unless they are also required by law.

For finish durability evidence, see our guide to salt-spray testing for shower hardware. A corrosion test is product-quality evidence; it does not replace a product-specific legal assessment. For own-brand supply arrangements, see our OEM and private-label shower hardware guide.

How EU Border Checks Work

Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 provides for controls on products entering the Union market and uses risk analysis to guide those checks. Authorities may suspend release when the legal conditions are met. The Regulation also states that release for free circulation is not proof of conformity with Union law. This does not mean every shipment is inspected. Review the current EUR-Lex text of Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 for the applicable provisions.

Buyer Checklist Before Shipment

  1. Write down the exact product model, configuration, intended use and destination.
  2. Identify the manufacturer, EU importer and any own-brand role in the supply chain.
  3. Ask which legislation applies and whether it requires CE marking for this product.
  4. Request the Declaration of Conformity and supporting records only where applicable, matched to the product model.
  5. Confirm required labels, instructions and traceability details for the destination market.
  6. List additional retailer, customer or project tests separately from legal requirements.
  7. Ask your customs broker to confirm the entry documents for the transaction; border release does not certify product compliance.

Perguntas Frequentes

Is a generic CE certificate enough?

Não. Não existe um órgão central da UE que emita um certificado genérico que autorize a marcação CE. Identifique as regras aplicáveis e a via de conformidade. Algumas regras exigem uma avaliação por um organismo notificado.

What should I request from a supplier?

Request records that match the exact product model and intended use, including a Declaration of Conformity and supporting technical documents where applicable, plus required labels, instructions and traceability evidence. Keep contract and retailer requirements separate from legal requirements.

Does customs inspect every shipment?

No. EU entry controls use risk analysis. Authorities may suspend release when legal conditions are met, and release for free circulation is not proof of conformity.

Do glass thickness or material grade decide CE status?

No. Glass thickness and material grade do not by themselves decide whether the finished product needs CE marking or prove that all applicable requirements are met.
