A die-casting tooling quote depends on the part design, tool architecture, material, process, engineering and the supplier’s included work. There is no reliable universal price, shot count or ownership rule. Ask for an itemized quote and write down what the payment covers, how the tool will be controlled, and how future maintenance or transfer will work.

Define the scope before comparing die quotes

Attach the current part drawing and identify the material, finish, annual or order quantity, target process, required sample stages and destination market. Ask the supplier to state whether the quote includes design review, tool design, die base and inserts, cavities, slides or other actions, cooling and venting features, trial shots, sample correction, measurement, packaging and delivery of samples. These are questions to resolve for the particular design, not a fixed list of charges that applies to every tool.

Request a drawing or tool specification that identifies the intended production part and revision. Clarify who pays for engineering changes after approval and how the supplier will document a change to the tool or process.

Compare the quoted cost and recovery assumptions

Separate one-time engineering and tooling charges from unit price, sampling, testing, maintenance, storage and future repair. If the supplier amortizes a charge into product price, ask for the assumed quantity, period, currency and what happens if the actual volume differs. A simple buyer calculation is tooling cost divided by the accepted units over which the buyer chooses to recover it; show multiple volume scenarios rather than treating a forecast as a guarantee.

Ask for quantity tiers under the same part, material, finish, packaging, inspection and delivery assumptions. Compare the full order commitment and inventory impact with the unit-price reduction. The landed-cost guide и MOQ and tier guide can help structure that comparison.

Ask for tool-life and maintenance terms without assuming a shot count

Tool life varies with tool design, material, process settings, maintenance and the supplier’s definition of an acceptable production part. Request the supplier’s basis for any quoted life estimate, the production conditions it assumes, how shots or cycles are counted, and the criteria used to decide that the tool needs repair or replacement. Agree how routine maintenance, unexpected repair and replacement are charged, who approves downtime and how the buyer is notified.

Do not compare a supplier’s quoted shot count with another supplier’s without matching the tool design, material, maintenance plan and acceptable part criteria. Keep production and maintenance records tied to the tool ID and part revision.

Write title, access and transfer rights into the agreement

Tool payment, legal title, physical possession, design-file rights and exclusivity are different issues. State in writing:

  • Who holds legal title at each payment milestone and how the tool is marked and identified.
  • Which products and customers may be made with the tool, and whether any exclusivity applies.
  • Who may inspect the tool, what condition records are kept, and who pays storage and maintenance.
  • How the tool and technical records can be transferred to another factory, including disassembly, packing and transport costs.
  • What happens after inactivity, a dispute, end of programme or tool retirement.

Have counsel review the terms for the relevant jurisdictions. Owning a tool does not necessarily grant ownership of every drawing, process or design element used to make the part.

Check whether an existing design can meet the requirement

Before commissioning a custom die, ask whether a current model can meet the product’s verified dimensions, interface and performance requirements. A redesign to adapt an existing part may still need engineering, sample approval and testing, so compare the full change scope and evidence—not only the quoted tooling line. If a new tool is needed, use the approved drawing and first-article process to establish the production reference.
